Date: April 29, 2017

Theme: Japanese

Host: Julie
Attendees: Andrea, Anna, Melissa, Jacquie, Reem, Tayisa, Sheree

Starters
Sushi: Vegetable Spring rolls and California rolls
Edamame

Wine pairing:
Hakutsuru SAKE
Comments: Paired well with the sushi, happy to say we tried it, but overall not a big hit!

Loosen Bros. Dr. L Sparkling Riesling
Vintages # 296095 $14.95
Light & fruity – I loved this one, and thought it paired really well with the sushi. Would buy again.

Lady Bug Malivoire 2016 Rosé
VQA Niagara - $16.95

Comments:   A big let down, tasted sour, and didn’t pair well with the appetizers at all. (Although before I bash the wine, I should consider maybe this bottle was off ??)

Main:
Spring salad with MISO dressing
Teriyaki Chicken
Teriyaki Salmon
Vegetable stir-fry with tofu
Japanese Rice

Wine pairing:
Pfaff Pinot Gris Alsace
LCBO 362087, $16.95
Comments: I just realized I bought this for a previous Maple curry dish for wine club, and it got good reviews… this time with Japanese it followed the Chenin Blanc, which was probably a mistake. Had we served this one first, would’ve probably been even better. I personally really liked this one. LCBO notes “Pale golden colour; aromas of honeyed peach and pear fruit with smoky, waxy notes and a touch of spice”. Sounds about right. I enjoyed it with the teriyaki flavor.

Vouvray Chenin Blanc – France
LCBO 253229 $15.00
Comments: The wine club winner tonight! Everyone enjoyed the sweetness, and pairing with teriyaki. LCBO notes “Light gold colour with aromas of peach, pear and mango; slightly off-dry, good acidity, light to medium body”.
(I personally found it a bit too sweet… and think it might have been better with the sushi).

Jekel Pinot Noir 2014, California
Vintages
LCBO 27268, $20.95
Comments: This was a big disappointment!! Tasted way too dry, tart and did not pair well with our meal at all. LCBO coded style as medium-bodied and fruity, but I struggled to find the fruit. Too bad, perhaps with a different meal… but for that price, I probably won’t be trying again.

Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier
LCBO 64287 $11.10
Comments: Good value if you are looking for a fresh, citrusy and more acidic wine, with flavours that are more tropical… too bad everyone finished the salmon before we opened this one, a bit too tart following everything else.

Dessert: Japanese butter cookies (recipe below) with lemon & basil sorbet & blueberry lemon sorbet

Thanks everyone for coming!!
