MAPLEICIOUS Wine Club January 23, 2016!

Date: January 23, 2016
Theme: Maple - a wintery welcome to the new year!
Host: Julie
Attendees: Andrea, Anna, Carm, Melissa, Jacquie, Reem, Tayisa, Shereen

Sparkling Maple sap (http://treewell.ca/)
Comments: Unfortunately not a hit, Carm liked it, but majority found it a bit watery, but might be nice with a bit of rum or whiskey mixed in!

Starters
Cheese: Oka, Maple Goat cheese, marble
Crackers / fruit nut crisps, grapes

Arugula salad w strawberries, goat cheese, red onion, dressing (oil, balsamic, maple syrup)

Wine pairing:
50 Degree Riesling Trocken, Henkell & Co. Germany
Vintages 424523, $15.95
Comments: Liked by all, nice amount of sweetness, good match with the salad

Main: Maple chicken curry served over penne

Wine pairing:
Pfaff Pinot Gris Alsace
LCBO 362087, $15.95
Comments: with a sweeter curry, they recommend off-dry riesling or pinot gris. This one seemed to be a perfect match, particularly when we added a bit of crushed chilies to the meal to spice it up.
A couple mentioned they would buy this one again.

Jim Jim (The Down underdog) Shiraz 2013, Australia
Vintages 682005, $15.95
Comments: lighter shiraz, fruity and delicious - would buy again. Matched the meal better before adding the crushed chillies... felt the pinot gris was a better pairing once spice added.
Red Knot Shiraz, Australia
LCBO 619395, $17.95
Comments: heavier than the jim jim, and almost tasted a bit sour, perhaps following the other wines. This might be a better one to try again on it's own with a heavier meal.

Dessert: Maple apple pie

Wine Pairing:
Jost maple dessert wine
Vintages 431791 375 ml bottle, $21.95
Comments: quite sweet, maybe too much so for most...still a nice treat. Carm had the creative idea of pouring it over ice cream, which is probably better than drinking it straight up!

Thanks everyone for coming!!
