Autumn Wine Club Oct 2012

Host:  Shereen
Attendees:  Tayisa, Julie, Jacquie, Reem, Anna, Andrea
Meal:  Caesar salad, veggie lasagna, apple crumble (made by Anna!)

I was in the mood to cook something comforting and easy after a long work week.  Dave helped me pick out the wines we had - most of them were really good!

1) With appetizers of cheese and bread, we had this tasty sparkling wine.  It was easy to drink and had a light flavour.

Pale gold colour, with very dusty, earthy, minerally aromas and some dried apple - distinctly old world style. The palate is dry, crisp yet creamy, with above average length. This won't be mistaken for champagne to be sure, but it has an intriguing array of wet chalky flavours that keep bringing you back for more.  Score - 88. (John Szabo, M.S., wineaccess.ca, March 30, 2010)
France Vintages $16.95

2) With the Caesar salad I paired a crisp white.  The scent of this wine was very fruity, but the taste was very mild.  Everyone agreed that this tasted much better with the tangy, lemon/garlic flavours of the Caesar salad rather than on its own.

Intensely fruity wine featuring aromas of banana, pineapple and peach, plus hay and chalk. Dry and very ripe and round. A big and flavourful white wine ideal for a pasta alfredo dish, or barbecued salmon with peach salsa.
Italy Vintages $15.65

3) With the lasagna I picked out a white and a few reds.  Pairing this chardonnay with the veggie lasagna was nice, but I think most preferred having reds.

Bright yellow colour; rich pineapple and banana with vanilla aromas; full-bodied, creamy and lush with pineapple fruit, baked applet and buttery, vanilla/nut flavours
Chile $12.95
4) Next we had a traditional Italian wine while still enjoying the lasagna.  This was easy to drink and paired nicely.

Flavourful Montepulciano with aromas of plum, black cherry, vanilla, cedar and a hint of green pepper. Dry, quite fruity and cedary with a real suppleness here. There is a good tannic framework on the finish.
Vintages Italy $15.95

5) We also tried this Spanish red with the main course.  It was spicy and easy to drink.

Bodegas Peique's 2010 Tinto is 100% Mencia sourced from 45-year-old vines and aged in barrel for 2 months. Aromas of earthy minerality, black cherry, black raspberry, and boysenberry compose the nose of this racy bargain-priced effort. Savory, ripe, and nicely proportioned, it will deliver enjoyment for another 4 years.  Score - 89. (Jay Miller, erobertparker.com, June 2011)
Vintages Spain $14.95

6) With our delicious apple crumble dessert that Anna made, we had a late harvest wine. I found a reasonably priced sweet late harvest as well as a sweet riesling.  I think everyone really enjoyed  both.  The late harvest was very fruity and the riesling was fresh and lite.

medium gold colour; peach, apricot and honey aromas; medium sweet, medium body; apricot and honey flavours follow the nose, nice length
Ontario $15.95

Bright straw colour; citrus, melon fruit, and flinty aromas and flavours with hints of vanilla and nuts; dry, medium bodied with balanced acidity and clean finish.
$16.95
7) And finally we sipped on this tasty chardonnay while we chatted the rest of the night away after our yummy meal!  It was a great night - thanks ladies!  :)
Bright straw colour; citrus, melon fruit, and flinty aromas and flavours with hints of vanilla and nuts; dry, medium bodied with balanced acidity and clean finish.
France $16.95
